  About the Journal

The Ateneo Law Journal, founded in 1951, began as a Journal published bi-monthly representing the collaborative effort of Ateneo student editors and staff members, and guided by faculty advisers. It featured articles of legal interest, the latest legislation, case law, and book reviews. Earlier volumes dedicated its final issue every year to digests of Supreme Court cases.

As the Journal progressed through time, the contents of the issues evolved with the changing needs of the student body. For a time, even the reprinting of Bar questions and suggested answers became an integral part of the Journal's pages.

During the early 90's, the Journal had to adapt to the most significant change in the Ateneo Law school curriculum - the introduction of the Juris Doctor degree. With this landmark, the Journal started to publish in its pages selected theses of the graduating batch. Until recent years, the Journal has regularly published such deserving theses. Moreover, the Journal included the works of law students.

The Journal presented an opportunity for students to harness their legal writing and research skills beyond the demands of classroom routine. Discussions, analyses, and criticisms of various legal issues were the products of such fertile tradition. Thus, from scholarly articles and exposition penned by the country's greatest and most respected legal minds, to essays and viewpoints from passionate law students, the Ateneo Law Journal published thought-provoking and remarkable compositions. That the Journal has memorialized them is without doubt.

Certainly, the Journal provided a venue for the scholastic competence of the community. In fact, behind the publication are past editors and staff members who, aimed with the discipline and training they nurtured, have since become public figures and legal luminaries of our times. It did not, however, confine itself to merely publishing the writings of faculty members, alumni, and students. The Journal had the distinction of launching the first ever Inter-Year debating contest in the School of Law. Moreover, in an affirmation of its excellence as a legal periodical, the Journal earned the recognition of being one of the Best Legal Publications among different law schools in the Philippines.

After over five decades, the Journal remains steadfast to original ideals it holds true and dear since it was established. Definitely, it has achieved a tremendous milestone that transcends the four walls of the school. The Journal has persisted in its vision to produce well-written legal works from the faculty and studentry. By far, the Journal went through various hardships in pursuit of a total quality publication that will best exemplify its tradition of excellence.
